Hold the Front Page
Ever fancied playing Lois Lane or Clark? Well now’s your chance in this cut-throat game of every-day newsfolk.
While the teams are receiving their brief, the lights begin to flicker, strange whizzing noises can be heard, there is a flash followed by darkness and the deafening sound of something crashing from the air. In the darkness we hear a newsflash
‘The Aliens Have Landed’
By the time the lights come on again your News Editor has sprung into action and gives you all your assignment – to find out whether this is the real thing or just a fantastic hoax. And if it is the real thing – what do the aliens want with our planet? Have they come in peace or is the world about to be taken over?
Each team is given an information pack, which details the facts so far, and gives contact details on experts etc. There is a head office in London with agencies in America, Australia and Africa. London coordinates the information flow and assigns tasks to the correspondents, who can only communicate to each other via intercom to London. Each agency has a local information pack and audio link ups to key establishments, which issue newsflashes – but you’ll have to stay alert, because there is no warning when the next announcement will be made.
The team must decide who (and how many) will be assigned to each location based on where they think most information will be found. Correspondents can be moved from location to location, but there are time and financial forfeits to doing this.
Activities that the team will be involved in include trying to break the alien codes, a treasure hunt to find the wreckage of the spaceship, interviewing ‘experts’, deciphering newsflashes, bargaining for secret taped messages, examining ‘physical evidence’ and ensuring that London is kept fully updated at all times – after all you never know when you might be kidnapped by the aliens!
This game not only encourages teamwork within teams and linked teams it also pits you against other colleagues in a win-lose scenario. It is a useful tool for helping to break down departmental silos and will test the teams initiative, tenacity, problem solving and communication skills. It is also possible to combine all the finished articles into a special edition newspaper, so everyone can have a lasting reminder of the event.
